kubik freedom – a light sculpture for human rights

29 September to 15 October 2017
@Berlin Leuchtet festival
Breitscheidplatz Berlin

artists: Balestra Berlin

The Kubik FREEDOM sculpture is an installation curated by Susa Pop | Public Art Lab for Amnesty International Germany. The installation is devoted to Idil Eser, the director of Amnesty in Turkey, the Berlin activist Peter Steudtner and the Amnesty board member Taner Kılıç, who among others were arrested in July 2017.

The light installation is created by the collective Balestra Berlin and is an interplay of illuminated water tanks enclosed in metal grids, which can generate a variety of light moods.

The sculpture’s light is identified as a metaphor to the well know Amnesty motto ‘It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness’. As a luminous wall the installation is supposed to create a meeting place for silent solidarity to the human rights activists imprisoned in Turkey.

The 14th October 2017 – the birthday of Idil Eser – is a global action day on the issue. Public Art Lab and Amnesty calls everyone to be at Breitscheidplatz at 3pm and support this action with their presence.
