Urban Screens Festival
The Urban Screens Festival series is guiding a worldwide movement that comprehensively approaches the redefinition and extended use of digital screens in public spaces and influences their sustainable integration in the urban landscape.
Mirjam Struppek initiated the first Urban Screens conference together with the ‘Institute for Networked Culture’ and the ‘Department of Art in Public Space’ in Amsterdam in 2005.
She is Creative Director of the upcoming ‘Urban Screens Melbourne 08’ at the Federation Square which will take place from 3rd to 8th October 2008.
The Federation Square will present an exciting program around the emerging interdisciplinary practice of ‘Urban Media’ with a focus on screen based projects in the context of the third Urban Screens conference. It will feature demonstration and proof of concept projects in relation to the International Urban Screens Conference with an expected attendance of 300 people.
Urban Media creates the opportunity for social interaction with installations and performances within the public sphere, recreating a communicative urban environment and social enhancement of our media saturated cities. They are inspired by new enabling technologies and technical platforms with an interdisciplinary approach to this public engagement from artists, designers, architects and media producers. Urban Media projects therefore have a great potential for building of community and shared experiences binding the diverse urban society together and supporting their exchange and civic education. Urban Media address the inhabitant as active citizen.
Federation Square represented as a worldwide unique place where the incorporation of various media tools into the design intersects with a careful creation of a modern public space, fused with artistic interventions and becoming a message in its own right.
